La banda se formó en Birmingham, Inglaterra, en 1970 cuando dos viejos amigos : el guitarrista KK Downing y el Bajista Ian Hill conocen a un cantante con una voz muy particular llamado Rob Halford y lo invitan a sumarse al proyecto rockero llamado Judas Priest. Deambulan por el circuito de bares hasta que en 1974 deciden incorporar una segunda guitarra y para eso llaman a Glenn Tipton que proporciona un sonido mas duro y agresivo a las composiciones, de esta manera el grupo queda sólidamente conformado siendo su punto débil la batería, por la cuál desfilan disco tras disco varios músicos, en 1980 Dave Holland consigue cierta estabilidad hasta 1989 que es reemplazado por el baterista actual: Scott Travis.
El Rock clásico de sus primeros discos, se fue endureciendo con cada trabajo realizado hasta convertirse en un Rock Metálico, llamado también Heavy Metal, eliminando todo vestigio de rock clásico y blues en su sonido, así se convierten en la primer banda puramente métalica y con la incorporación a su vestuario de cuero y tachas pasan a ser la imagen del movimiento metálico. El éxito en las ventas logra su punto máximo en 1980 con "British Steel ", a partir de ahí encadenan una serie de trabajos discográficos de gran calidad que los confirman en la vanguardia de la escena metálica hasta el año 1997 que se produce el alejamiento de Rob Halford para continuar como solista, lo reemplazó Tim "The Ripper" Owens proveniente de una banda tributo y que su mejor virtud era poseer una voz similar a Halford, con Owens editaron 2 discos con un sonido muy duro y potente, pero que no obtuvieron respuesta en el público que clamaba por el regreso del "Dios del Metal", que se produjo en 2005 con un nuevo trabajo llamado "Angel Of Retribuition" que se disparó al tope de los rankings y devolvió al grupo a los primeros planos de la escena mundial.
Judas Priest es sinónimo de Rock Metálico y es motivo de culto para los seguidores del género, siendo influencia obligada para todos los grupos que se formaron años después con la premisa de Defender la Fe...
