La Gran Banda Irlandesa, se formó en Dublin en 1977, cuando el baterista Larry Mullen Jr reunió al cantante Paul Hewson (luego se hizo llamar Bono vox), al guitarrista Dave Evans (apodado The Edge) y al bajista Adam Clayton.
Luego de un comienzo dudoso , la gran oportunidad les llega cuando consiguen firmar para el sello Island Records que se encarga de editar su primer trabajo llamado Boy, el cual es un éxito debido al sonido particular de la guitarra de The Edge y a la conmovedora voz de Bono que entona canciones con alto contenido político y social que refleja la realidad de su país en esos tiempos. El siguiente trabajo llamado October no cumple con las expectativas generadas por su predecesor y significa un retroceso para el grupo que lejos de amedrentarse, redoblan la apuesta en cuanto a calidad de sonido y composiciones con una temática aún mas jugada, el resultado es su tercer LP , War, que los deposita en la cima de los charts de su país y del Reino Unido, pero para conquistar el mundo hacía falta un cambio, ir un paso mas allá en el tema de la producción y para eso se unieron a Brian Eno y Daniel Lanois que encontraron la manera de dar el salto de calidad que estaban necesitando , puliendo aún mas la guitarra lograron un sonido sofisticado y crearon ese ambiente único y prácticamente indescriptible que hace al sonido de U2 inconfundible. La trilogía The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree y Rattle and Hum, transformaron a U2 en una Mega Banda , con records absolutos en ventas, espectacularmente acompañados por shows impactantes desde lo escénico y lo musical. Así ingresan a la década del 90 que se puede decir que fue escencialmente experimental con un gran trabajo como Achtung baby, pero con otros desconcertantes como Zooropa y Pop donde experimentan sonidos tecnos y electrónicos. Afortunadamente el año 2000 los encuentra de regreso a sus raíces rockeras ( las que nunca debieron abandonar) que los mantiene en ese sitio glorioso dedicado a las grandes bandas. Tuvimos el privilegio de tener a la banda en nuestro país en 1998 y 2006 y posiblemente podamos deslumbrarnos con su show en 2010.
Y finalmente llegó el dia !!! y quien iba a pensarlo.., U2 se presentó en La Plata !! el miércoles 30 de Marzo de 2011 y después de soportar estoicamente una decepcionante actuación de la banda soporte Muse, pudimos volver a verlos y a emocionarnos con un espectacular show que ofreció sus mas grandes canciones, con cuatro músicos que desplegando su eterno carisma en el escenario, nos regalaron una noche inolvidable y seguramente irrepetible en la cual tuvimos el privilegio de tener a la banda en nuestra ciudad y tan cerca de nuestra casa, que mas se puede pedir ??
